Eberwein, Cynthia A.; Pratt, Sheila R.; McNeil, Malcolm R.; Fossett, Tepanta R. D.; Szuminsky, Neil J.; Doyle, Patrick J. – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2007
Purpose: To assess the Computerized Revised Token Test (CRTT) performance of individuals with normal hearing under several intensity conditions and under several spectral and temporal perturbation conditions. Method: Sixty normal-hearing listeners were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups. Group 1 provided performance-intensity information about…

Doehring, Donald G.; Swisher, Linda P. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1971
The Bekesy and Rosenberg procedures were used to investigate whether tone decay varies systematically as a function of the initial hearing threshold level of the test tone in sensorineural loss. Tone decay tended to increase with increased hearing threshold level for both tests at all three frequencies used. (Author/KW)

Green, David M. – American Psychologist, 1983
Analyzes a method of detecting changes in a particular frequency band by evaluating the overall shape or profile of the auditory signal spectrum. Claims that profile analysis is different from intensity discrimination, and applies the new method to detecting noise sinusoid and to results obtained when signal frequency is uncertain. Zekveld, Adriana A.; George, Erwin L. J.; Kramer, Sophia E.; Goverts, S. Theo; Houtgast, Tammo – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2007
Purpose: In this study, the authors aimed to develop a visual analogue of the widely used Speech Reception Threshold (SRT; R. Plomp & A. M. Mimpen, 1979b) test. The Text Reception Threshold (TRT) test, in which visually presented sentences are masked by a bar pattern, enables the quantification of modality-aspecific variance in speech-in-noise…

Besing, Joan; Koehnke, Janet; Abouchacra, Kim; Letowski, Tomasz – Topics in Language Disorders, 1998
This paper describes a new "class" of auditory tests designed to evaluated the ability of young children to detect commonly encountered sounds; localize sound sources; and understand speech in noise. The tests appear to be sensitive to the effects of auditory pathology and to the normal development of auditory processing skills. (DB)

Masataka, Nobuo – Developmental Science, 2006
Behavioral preferences for consonance over dissonance were tested in hearing infants of deaf parents and in hearing infants of hearing parents when they were 2 days old. Using a modified visual-fixation-based, auditory-preference procedure, I found that both 2-day-old infants of deaf parents and those of hearing parents looked longer at a visual…

Battin, R. Ray; Waryas, Paul A. – Journal of Childhood Communication Disorders, 1985
Profiles of three persons (9-11 years old) with extremely reduced masking level difference results (scores which measure binaural release from masking) are reported. It is suggested that tests of the MLD appear to be a useful adjunct of an evaluation battery for patients with presumed auditory perceptual problems. (CL)

Gengel, Roy W.; Watson, Charles S. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Disorders, 1971
Discussed are three problems for clinicians to consider when using temporal integration data for diagnostic purposes with the aurally handicapped. Problems stem from evidence that integration time depends on frequency, that an individual can vary considerably on repeated measurements, and that integration time can differ with different…

Werner, Lynne A.; And Others – Child Development, 1992
Assessed auditory temporal acuity among infants of 3, 6, and 12 months of age and adults. Gap detection thresholds were quite poor in infants. Effects of restricting the range of frequencies available for detecting gaps were qualitatively similar for infants and adults. (GLR)

Humes, Larry E.; Burk, Matthew H.; Coughlin, Maureen P.; Busey, Thomas A.; Strauser, Lauren E. – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2007
Purpose: To examine age-related differences in auditory speech recognition and visual text recognition performance for parallel sets of stimulus materials in the auditory and visual modalities. In addition, the effects of variation in rate of presentation of stimuli in each modality were investigated in each age group. Method: A mixed-model design…

Schochat, Eliane; Musiek, Frank E. – Journal of Communication Disorders, 2006
The human peripheral auditory system is fully developed at birth; however, myelination continues for several years in the higher auditory pathways. The aim of the present study was to assess the maturation course of the frequency and duration pattern tests and the middle latency response (MLR). One hundred and fifty normal participants ranging…
