Nicolson, Rob; Castellanos, F. Xavier – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 2000
This commentary discusses the use of pharmacological treatments to reduce over activity and hyperactivity in children with autism. While it concedes that some medications, particularly antipsychotics, can effectively reduce over activity, it cautions that the effects of psychotropic medications on inattention remain poorly defined and stresses the…

Coude, Francois X.; Mignot, Claire; Lyonnet, Stanislas; Munnich, Arnold – Journal of Attention Disorders, 2007
Objective: The authors analyze the occurrence of grade repetition and inattention in children diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Method: The participant group consisted of 310 patients with NF1 and a control group of 242 individuals. Sutcliffe, Paul A.; Bishop, Dorothy V. M.; Houghton, Stephen; Taylor, Myra – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2006
Debate continues over the hypothesis that children with language or literacy difficulties have a genuine auditory processing deficit. Several recent studies have reported deficits in frequency discrimination (FD), but it is unclear whether these are genuine perceptual impairments or reflective of the comorbid attentional problems that exist in…

deHaas, Patricia A. – Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, 1986
Attention styles and peer relationships of hyperactive (N=23) and normal (N=68) boys and girls in grades 3-5 were compared using behavioral, cognitive, and sociometric measures. Among reported results was that hyperactive girls displayed more conduct problems than normal girls, but less than hyperactive boys. (Author/JW)

Pellegrini, A. D.; Horvat, Michael – Educational Researcher, 1995
Critiques the current concept of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as it applies to primary school boys and girls. The article defines ADHD, presents a model of developmental contextualization, and shows ways in which theory can overcome limitations in current conceptualizations of ADHD and guide future pedagogy and research. Minder, Barbara; Das-Smaal, Edith A.; Orlebeke, Jacob F. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1998
A study that investigated the relationships between exposure to lead and memory and attention in 313 boys (ages 9-12) in special-education schools in the Netherlands found blood-lead levels were higher in children with lower socioeconomic status and those with more hand-to-mouth behavior but did not influence cognitive factors. Huguenin, Nancy H. – Research in Developmental Disabilities, 2000
A study investigated whether computer touch-screen technology could improve the attentional skills of three adolescents with severe mental retardation. Initially, prior reinforcement contingencies of individual stimuli failed to control their attention. Extended exposure to single stimulus training and conflict compounds, however, alleviated…

Deutscher, Barbara; Fewell, Rebecca R. – Topics in Early Childhood Special Education, 2005
This study investigated whether specific behaviors observed in 30 month-old low-birthweight children are predictive of diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and school difficulties at age 8. Videotapes of 571 participants were coded using the Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Observational Rating Scale (ADHD-ORS).…

Sterr, Annette M. – Learning & Individual Differences, 2004
Attention acts as the mind's "gatekeeper" by regulating and prioritizing the stimuli processed by the central nervous system. It is essential for cognitive performance, memory, and behavior, and we know that even slight deficiencies in attention compromise learning. Basic neuroscience research further indicates that attention consists of (fairly)…

Greenewald, M. Jane; Walsh, Cheryl – 1996
An attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) student's impulsivity and inattentiveness were interfering with his learning and that of his classmates. Prior to experimental intervention, a simple event recording was conducted over nine class periods to determine the frequency of this subject's impulsivity and inattentiveness. For ease of…
