New Directions in Asian Studies in Undergraduate Education in the 1970's.
New York State Education Dept., Albany. Foreign Area Materials Center.
This document reports on a conference designed to investigate new directions in Asian studies in undergraduate education in the 1970's. Discussed were: the language and area studies implications for teaching asian Studies at the undergraduate level; future needs for materials in Asian studies; what an area studies program should be at an undergraduate college; and interinstitutional cooperation in developing Asian studies in undergraduate education. Panel sessions on assessment of existing learning resources for undergraduate Asian studies with emphasis on Japan, China, Southeast Asia, and South Asia were presented. Principal conference findings indicate that while there has been substantial progress in the past decade in growth of Asian studies in undergraduate education, there are many gaps and needs that can be met through cooperative effort of various kinds among major university centers.
