Playing with Klee
Yoder-Wyse, Jhan
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v107 n5 p30-31 Jan 2008
Young children are experts at make-believe and delight in listening to tales of fantasy and wonder. When the author learned that the second-grade students in her school were studying fairy tales and legends, she took advantage of their natural interests and classroom experiences and introduced them to the magical, dreamlike paintings of Swiss artist Paul Klee. In particular, she focused on Klee's 1932 work entitled "Sinbad the Sailor" and familiarized students with both the painting and the literary adventures of Sinbad in "Tales from the Arabian Nights." This article describes a lesson which outlines her instructional approach and sequence. (Contains 3 resources and 1 online resource.)
