Greenlee, Mel – 1974
Children's productions of words with stop-liquid clusters in the adult model are compared across six languages. Although the children learning these languages need not follow the same course of learning, processes operative on adult clusters are shown to be very similar. The children's productions all progressed through the same three major…

Plaskacz, Bohdan – 1963
Reasons for the structural or functional classification of the Russian /y/ as an allophone of /i/ are explained in this article. Theory countering this classification, proposed by L.V. Scherba and L.R. Zinder, is also presented. Additionally, comments by Kenneth Pike support the author's criticism of the structuralist approach to the problem. (RL)
Descriptors: Acoustic Phonetics, Articulation (Speech), Distinctive Features (Language), Language Patterns

Cruttenden, Alan – Journal of Child Language, 1978
This article discusses children's phonological limitations, including perceptual difficulties and productive difficulties. (NCR)
Descriptors: Articulation (Speech), Child Language, Cognitive Development, Language Acquisition

Torreblanca, Maximo – Hispania, 1978
Discussed the pronunciation of the phoneme /s/ in Spanish and all the linguistic variations of it, especially in the dialects that have the sibilant articulation. (NCR)
Descriptors: Articulation (Speech), Consonants, Dialects, Language Instruction
Cardenas, M. Cristina – Yelmo, 1977
The historical changes in the teaching methods of modern languages are discussed, with emphasis on the modern principle that language, before anything, is a means of oral communication. (Text is in Spanish.) (NCR)

Hoffman, Paul R.; And Others – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1977
Ten children (mean age = 6 years, 7 months) who misarticulated /r/ participated in a task designed to survey inconsistent misarticulatory behavior, repeating 51 sentences during each of three trials. (Author/IM)

Levitt, Andrea G.; Healy, Alice F. – Journal of Memory and Language, 1985
Describes two experiments in which subjects read aloud pairs of nonsense syllables rapidly presented on a display screen or repeated the same syllables presented auditorily. Results support an explanation of the speech error generation process in which a segment's strength is a function of its frequency of occurrence in English. (SED)

Ramasubramanian, N.; Thosar, R. B. – Phonetica, 1973

Siren, Kathleen A.; Wilcox, Kim A. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1995
This study examined effects of familiarity with a speech target on coarticulation magnitude in 30 young children and 10 adults. Children exhibited a greater effect of a following vowel on the preceding fricative than did adults. Nonmeaningful production items exhibited greater effects of the vowel on the preceding fricative than did meaningful…

Dewelde, M.; Landercy, A. – Revue de Phonetique Appliquee, 1974
This article attempts, through a study on the acoustic and the perceptual level of the contrast between two Dutch vocalic phonemes, to present a rigorous methodology for contrastive phonetics to be used by language teachers. (Text is in French.) (AM)
Descriptors: Applied Linguistics, Articulation (Speech), Auditory Perception, Contrastive Linguistics

Coleman, R. F.; Hollien, H. – Journal of Phonetics, 1975
Underwater intelligibility of three standard word lists is evaluated in two experiments. Results indicate that words which are equated for difficulty in normal conditions are likewise equated under water. Phoneme distortion was examined in a multiple choice test which showed fricatives and place of production to be most affected under water. (SC)

Edwards, Mary Louise – Journal of Child Language, 1974
Perception and production data were collected from 28 children, ages 1 year 8 months to 3 years 11 months to test four specific hypotheses on the acquisition of initial fricatives and glides in English, based on the assumptions that perception precedes production and unmarked precedes marked. Perception data were collected by the Shvachkin-Garnica…

Oden, Gregg C. – Journal of Phonetics, 1978
A model of phoneme identification is proposed which describes the process by which continuous acoustic featural information about the place of articulation and the voicing of speech sounds is integrated during phoneme identification. (AM)
Descriptors: Acoustic Phonetics, Articulation (Speech), Artificial Speech, Auditory Discrimination

Lindau, Mona – Language, 1978
This paper presents an inventory of the features that are necessary to describe vowel systems in the languages of the world. The relationship between the features and then articulatory and acoustic correlates is explored. (Author/NCR)
