Amplifying Community Voices through Public Art
Oriz, Michelle Angela
Community Literacy Journal, v14 n2 Article 2 p25-37 Spr 2020
Michelle Angela Ortiz is a visual artist, skilled muralist, and community arts educator who uses her art as a vehicle to represent people and communities whose histories are often lost or co-opted. Through community arts practices, painting, and public art installations, she creates platforms for social change. In this article, she describes some of her works and how personal experiences inform her creative process, which is activated through facilitating dialogues, identifying themes, translating themes into visual representations, and doing this with integrity and respect with the community.
