Trends in Student Misconduct: The 70s and 80s.
Moles, Oliver C.
This paper examines national data from the early 1970s to the mid 1980s in order to identify trends in student and teacher victimization in schools. All the student and teacher victimization data reviewed in this paper contradict the notion of a progressive worsening of the school crime problem. Assault statistics showed little change, robberies went down in the most recent period, and thefts showed a long-term decline. Thefts from teachers and all offenses against students in schools, as reported by the victims, remained essentially level or declined in the 1970s and 1980s. Though there have been few other studies on the subject, those that exist show great disparities in findings. Results suggest that societal forces rather than school factors may explain the overall trends. One such condition could be the smaller number of youth today. Another possibility is tougher law enforcement. The risks of being victimized vary with the school setting. Junior high schools and schools in large cities are likely to have more crimes of personal violence than senior high schools or schools in other locations. Six tables summarize findings. A list of references is included. (PS)
