Walker, R. Dale; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1983
Tested the hypothesis of different treatment outcome of male alcoholics (N=245) as a function of neuropsychological performance, aftercare involvement, and length of hospitalization. Results indicated that neuropsychological performance was related to some outcome criteria and that there was a strong relationship of aftercare involvement to most…

Elder, Ivan R.; And Others – Journal of Alcohol and Drug Education, 1988
Alcoholic male inpatients (N=26) who preferred disulfiram and who were entering a 28-day rehabilitation program were given either disulfiram, placebo, or nothing and were re-assessed about preferring disulfiram at discharge. The results appeared to show that the preference for disulfiram was unaffected by the treatment conditions. (Author/NB)

Penick, Elizabeth C.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Compared sex role attributes of male alcoholic veterans to those of 81 nonalcoholic veterans and 386 college students. Results showed male alcoholics were sex-typed more frequently as feminine than masculine. Results were interpreted as a consequence, not a cause of the disorder and were considered reversible with sustained sobriety. (JAC)

Van Wormer, Katherine – Small Group Behavior, 1989
Based on the view that attention to cultural/sex-role norms is essential in working with the male alcoholic, this article discusses the rationale for an all-male setting for group therapy and the relation between sex-role behavior and alcoholism in men. It then describes the introduction of a gender-based men's group to meet the special needs of…

Larson, Lisa M.; Heppner, P. Paul – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1989
Administered problem-solving appraisal inventories to Veterans Administration inpatient recovering male alcoholics (N=45) to generalize problem-solving appraisal research beyond normal population to clinical population. Results suggest that problem-solving appraisal of inpatient male alcoholics is more similar to late adolescents than to adults.…

Query, William T. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1983
Compared individual differences and treatment effectiveness in male volunteer alcoholics (N=47) in a 10-day electroconditioning aversion program. Follow-up showed combination therapy was more successful. Internals and hard liquor drinkers tended to be abstinent as predicted. Field dependency was a more unstable variable for outcome. (Author/JAC)

O'Leary, Michael R.; And Others – Journal of Personality Assessment, 1980
The extent to which the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT) measures aspects of personality and cognitive impairment was explored in 81 male alcoholics receiving treatment for alcoholism. Results suggest GEFT may be more a measure of cognitive impairment than personality. Alternative explanations are explored. (Author/RL)

Sheppard, Debra; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1988
Examined patient characteristics relevant to treatment outcome by administering Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory to 86 men following admission to a residential alcoholism treatment program. Cluster analyses yielded three subtypes which differed significantly in their rates of treatment completion. Comparison of data to that obtained in…
