Examines the relationship between education and development in developing nations. Advocates the fostering of a technical humanism--the development of knowledge in all its forms as a basis for action. In this system, technical education is as highly valued as general education. In Kenya, village polytechnics have been started through the efforts of harambees (local fund-raising). An informal program, the polytechnics are designed to aid the agrarian oriented society in improving its efficiency. (CP)
