Montessori communities are known for beautiful mealtimes. Even at the Infant & Toddler level, mealtime is a key moment for children to exercise independence and healthy social interactions. Meals and snacks with the youngest Montessori students are an essential component of the work cycle and daily routine. The Practical Life curriculum allows children to practice how to be human--and what can be more human than sharing and enjoying a meal? Children learn how to prepare food, transfer water into glasses, and wash dishes--skills and processes inherent in nearly every meal they will eat for the rest of their lives--in their correct context in a real-life situation. Mealtimes with infants and toddlers are not events that exist outside of the Practical Life curriculum or uninterrupted work period. Instead, they are an essential part of children's Montessori education and work. This article presents how Montessori educators help infants and toddlers embrace mealtime in their day-to-day routines and reach independence.
