The Magic of Rhythm Instruments: Developing Musical Awareness in Young Children
Connors, Abigail
Teaching Music, v14 n2 p40 Oct 2006
Young children are natural-born musicians and rhythm instruments provide a wonderful bridge between a toddler's innate need to make noise and a child's true musical awareness and expressiveness. Rhythm instrument activities are so easy. With most of them, the child is simply copying one motion at a time. There is nothing to remember. Another wonderful thing about rhythm instruments is that they involve the body in keeping a beat and feeling rhythm, so the children are fully participating musically. They are really creating the music themselves, and kids love playing these instruments. Rhythm instrument activities encourage technical exploration as well as expand movement repertoire and vocabulary. These activities also help children develop an awareness of rhythm, phrasing, tempo, dynamics, and other elements of musicality, in a natural way that is suited to their needs and their style of learning. In this article, the author shares some easy and fun activities to introduce the class to playing together with different rhythm instruments.
