Under Pressure: Tailored CPR with Stress Management for Formerly Incarcerated Individuals

This study aimed to increase rates of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training and bystander response to sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) by critically exploring and putting into practice different learning methods for formerly incarcerated adult learners at the Delancey Street Foundation. Four classes with n = 31 multi-ethnic male students were used to iteratively develop and test course structure and content. Using modified focus groups, feedback, and instructor evaluation of skills through oral and hands-on examination, we developed a tailored 1-hour CPR course with a stress management component targeting common barriers to bystander response (e.g., physiological stress). Findings suggest a shorter 1-hour adapted and tailored CPR course was as effective in training individuals as the traditional 4-hour course. Participants also reported the stress reduction technique would be a useful tool when dealing with SCA situations. Additionally, results showed informality, kinesthetic learning, and repetition are essential when working with this population.
