Effects of Sexual Education on the Sexual Attitudes of Caregivers for Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
Hope Huling
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, Spalding University
Society often holds strongly biased and stigmatized opinions when it comes to what is deemed appropriate or inappropriate for the sexual behavior of individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) or developmental disabilities (DD). This is typically due to the beliefs that the ID/DD population are either only capable of having child-like mentalities and should be protected from any and all sexual behaviors, or that they are over- or hyper-sexed individuals who should be rid of all sexual feelings and abilities to protect the people around them. However, the ID/DD population of people are often neither of these things. When they are kept from receiving the appropriate sexual education that they need to develop healthy sexual knowledge, attitudes, and relationship skills, they can be left exposed to increases in confusion, mental health risks, societal biases and stigma, exploitation, and abuse. People with ID/DD often live in highly structured and controlled environments with their choices and schedules strongly influenced by a network of caregivers. These caregiving systems and the attitudes caregivers hold have the power to facilitate or restrict opportunities for sexual education and healthy sexual expression. Caregiver attitudes can be affected by the lack of support, resources, and education they feel they have access to, which can increase shame and stigma for both caregivers and the individuals they care for. When caregivers feel supported and receive accurate information to support the ID/DD population, their stress levels reduce and their care improves. When individuals in the ID/DD community have supporting caregivers who advocate for their independence in areas such as sexuality and relationships, the individuals with ID/DD often have more control and independence in their lives and are able to identify and avoid exploitative and abusive situations they may encounter. The current study seeks to provide treatment in the form of education to caregivers on the topics of sexual behaviors, sexuality, and sexual advocacy for individuals in the ID/DD community. A pre- and post-test measure will be used as a determinant of caregiver sexual attitudes, before and after educational sessions that are focused on sexuality and sexual advocacy curriculum are delivered to the group of caregivers.
