Strengths of Dyscalculia: A Multiple Case Study Analysis of Gifted Adults
Ashleigh D'Aunoy
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Bridges Graduate School
For many learning differences, such as dyslexia, ADHD, and autism, there is a growing understanding of the benefits of those diverse brain wirings; however, research into dyscalculia is lagging behind, and there is limited knowledge that supports a strength-based view and recognition of its potential positive characteristics. Twice-exceptional students are also poorly understood, though research supports a strength-based, talent-focused approach as the best way to support these complex and unique students. This qualitative multiple case study analysis was designed to examine the strengths, experiences, and perceptions of gifted adults with dyscalculia. Semi-structured interviews resulted in data that reflected the participants' lived experiences as twice-exceptional adults who have struggled with dyscalculia. Their experiences revealed the frustration of learning from teachers ill-equipped to support their deficits or to identify and grow their strengths; the challenges of shaping a healthy sense of self; and the ways in which dyscalculia continues to impact them in adulthood. Major findings of the study include identification of a pattern of strengths, the importance of identification and opportunities to develop strengths, emotional and behavioral responses to their experiences in learning math, and navigating the challenges that dyscalculia presents in their adult lives. This study sought to explore the experiences of gifted adults with dyscalculia and to begin to identify and shine a spotlight on their academic, cognitive, socioemotional, and creative strengths. It is hoped that this research will support a shift in the conversation toward a strength-based understanding of dyscalculia as a cognitive difference with its own set of unique strengths.
