Andic, Branko; Cvjeticanin, Stanko; Maricic, Mirjana; Steševic, Danijela – Journal of Biological Education, 2021
Although very rare, the existing research on the biological education of blind people indicates that teaching content is not fully in line with the sensory perception of that content by the blind. The aim of this study is to analyse the morphological details which the blind can register in multisensory plant research and to harmonise the…

Balan, Oana; Moldoveanu, Alin; Moldoveanu, Florica; Nagy, Hunor; Wersenyi, Gyorgy; Unnporsson, Runar – Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness, 2017
Introduction: As the number of people with visual impairments (that is, those who are blind or have low vision) is continuously increasing, rehabilitation and engineering researchers have identified the need to design sensory-substitution devices that would offer assistance and guidance to these people for performing navigational tasks. Auditory…

Krupa, Chelsea; Esmail, Shaniff – Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness, 2010
This study investigated problems that children with visual impairments experience with sexual health education. The participants identified themes that affected their knowledge of sexual health and the need for sexual health education. Strategies that address sexual health issues for individuals with visual impairments are described.

Griffith, Penny L.; Robinson, Jacques H. – Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, 1984
Signs from lists used with mentally retarded and autistic children and previously rated for visual iconicity were presented tactilely to 13 blind adults. Visual and tactile ratings were very similar across blind and sighted groups, as were statements of relationship between signs and their meanings. (Author/CL)

Terzieff, Ivan; Ashcroft, S. C. – 1979
The study investigated ways of increasing reading rates by nine blind adults using the Optacon (Optical to Tactile Converter), a portable reading aid for the blind that converts the image of the printed letter into a pattern of vibrating rods. Ss' reading rates were examined when using instructional materials emphasizing linguistic structure, the…

Shafrath, M. R. – Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, 1986
The article describes the Fishburne Code tactile labeling system as a practical alternative for those adult blind who are unwilling or unable to learn braille. Instructional materials, teaching methods, and practical applications of the Fishburne Code are noted. (Author/DB)

Luxton, K.; And Others – Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, 1994
Sixteen people with blindness or visual impairments used three different types of tactual maps of the New York City subway system presenting information at three levels of specificity. Results indicated that the tactual maps improved participants' attitudes toward the subway and benefited blind as well as low vision participants. (Author/DB)

Easton, Randolph D.; Bentzen, Billie Louise – Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, 1980
Two experiments compared single v double lines on tactile mobility maps using 12 blindfolded sighted Ss, 12 congenitally blind Ss, and 12 adventitiously blinded Ss (age range for all three groups, 7 to 72). (Author)

Espinosa, M. A.; Ochaita, E. – Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness, 1998
This study evaluated the effects of three instructional methods (direct experience, cartographic representation (tactile map), and verbal description) on the spatial knowledge of 30 adults with blindness. Results indicated that participants' practical spatial knowledge was better when they learned with a tactile map than in either of the other…

HEBER, RICK; AND OTHERS – 1967
THE PURPOSES OF THE PROJECT WERE TO (1) DESIGN A SELF-PACED TEACHING DEVICE FOR THE BLIND WHICH WOULD ALLOW THE EVALUATION OF SYSTEMATIC TRAINING IN PREREADING TACTUAL DISCRIMINATION AND BRAILLE CHARACTER DISCRIMINATION AS BOTH RELATE TO SUBSEQUENT ABILITY TO LEARN TO READ BRAILLE SYMBOLS, (2) DESIGN AN ELECTRONIC AUTOMATED DEVICE WHICH ALLOWS THE…
