Marshall, Thurgood – Freedomways, 1978
While the author applauds the judgment of the Supreme Court that a university may consider race in its admissions process, he considers it ironic that, after several hundred years of class-based discrimination against Blacks, the Court is unwilling to hold that a class-based remedy for that discrimination is permissible. (Author/KR)
Descriptors: Admission Criteria, Affirmative Action, Black History, Blacks

Fort, Edward – Journal of Negro Education, 1978
Given the essence of the Bakke decision, it is now incumbant upon committed faculties in the nation's universities to continue to implement affirmative action policies which do, in fact, articulate race as a legitimate criterion for admission. (Author/EB)

Time, 1978

Rosenzweig, Robert M. – AGB Reports, 1978
The first need after the Bakke case is for an atmosphere in which the right questions can be asked and answers sought. Advocates and opponents of preferential admissions need to be willing to discuss the root issues with candor and courage. (Author/LBH)

Cox, Matt – 2002
The University of California Regents have instituted a "Comprehensive Review" system for admission that purports to consider the whole student instead of merely grades and test scores. An examination of the Comprehensive Review reveals a back door attempt to reinstate racial preferences in college admission, a practice the Regents banned…

Sexton, John – Harvard Educational Review, 1979
The author describes the special-admissions program challenged in the Bakke litigation and the Supreme Court's reaction to it. He examines the desirability of an affirmative-action component in an enlightened admissions program; and offers two models of special-admissions programs that would meet the requirements of the Bakke decision. (CT)

Ginger, Ann Fagan – Harvard Civil Rights - Civil Liberties Law Review, 1979
Affirmative action and reverse discrimination are discussed. Facts that were omitted from the court record on the Bakke case are examined. The need for encouraging minority students and women to continue to press for school admission and for lawyers to continue to press affirmative action suits is stressed. (MC)

Harvard Civil Rights - Civil Liberties Law Review, 1979
The Bakke case is the most recent of many cases in which the Supreme Court has assessed the impact of the Brown decision that racial discrimination in education is unconstitutional. The Bakke decision has established that race is a factor which may constitutionally be considered in university admissions under certain circumstances. (Author/MC)

Hurtado, Aida – Review of Higher Education, 2005
The organized political efforts to dismantle affirmative action programs resulted in both advantages and disadvantages in keeping the doors of higher education open to historically underrepresented students. Mitchell, Ceanne; McSpadden, Lucy – UCEA Review, 1977
Although all the implications of equal educational opportunity cannot be determined at the present time, schools of educational administration must stress the offensiveness of social injustice and commit themselves to the development of a culturally pluralistic society through the use of available institutional means. The 35 departments of…
