The Role of District Leadership Preparation Programs in Developing Culturally Responsive Leaders
Jarron Hutchins
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of West Georgia
Eleven educators participated in this bounded qualitative case study, which was developed to understand the role of District Leadership Preparation Programs (DLPP) in producing culturally responsive leaders. Through interviews and observations, the research found that DLPPs are not developing future leaders to use culturally responsive practices while in leadership positions. The study found that DLPPs should intentionally incorporate culturally responsive practices into the course structures of DLPPs. Past participants noted the lack of reflective practices and struggled to identify the inclusion of culturally responsive principles. The study found the use of reflective practices were essential to future leaders being responsible for exploring biases and understand the potential impact of past experiences on future leaders. Leaders need formal professional learning devoted to addressing personal biases to lead reflective learning environments. The needs of the community should also be a central focus of DLPPs to help school leaders fully understand their role. Leveraging the role of DLPPs to include culturally responsive principles is paramount to preparing leaders to improve schools.
