Descriptors: Ability, Academic Achievement, Achievement Tests, Black Youth

Schneider, Lawrence J.; Overton, Tom D. – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1983
Discussed Holland's views that educational achievement relates to primary personality orientation in a predictable fashion. Primary code types of college males and females (N=536) were assessed. First-semester grade point averages for each code type and Scholastic Aptitude Test scores served as criterion indices. Mixed support emerged for…

Grossman, Fred M.; Johnson, Kathleen M. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1983
The capability of the Slosson Intelligence Test and the Otis Lennon Mental Ability Test to predict academic achievement as measured by the Stanford Achievement Test is examined. The results indicated that the Slosson and Otis-Lennon significantly predict Stanford Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension, and Mathematical Concepts subtest scores.…

Watkins, David; Hattie, John – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1981
Investigations of the Inventory of Learning Processes (ILP) with college freshmen revealed satisfactory internal consistency coefficients for two of the four ILP scales but cast doubt on the factor structure of the inventory. As predictors of grade point average of Australian students, the scales were successful. (Author/GK)

Thiel, Glenn W.; Reynolds, Cecil R. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1980
Forty trainable mentally retarded students were concurrently administered the Stanford Scale and the Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT). WRAT reading, spelling and arithmetic subtests were regressed on Stanford intelligence quotients. Predictions were statistically valid. Derived regression equations are reported. (Author/CP)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Achievement Tests, Adolescents, Intelligence Tests

Rogers, Bruce G.; And Others – Psychology in the Schools, 1980
The canonical correlations and canonical loadings indicated the existence of a single dominant factor between the primary and middle grade data. This factor was interpreted as general scholastic ability. (Author)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Achievement Tests, Cognitive Measurement, Elementary Education

Morine-Dershimer, Greta – Educational Research Quarterly, 1978
Teachers' predictions of pupil success in elementary school were compared to pupil performance in terms of quartile placement on national test norms. Results indicated that teachers were able to predict reading achievement but had less predictive ability in other areas. (JKS)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Achievement Tests, Elementary Education, Elementary School Teachers

George, William C. – Journal of Special Education, 1979
Using the empirically based evidence that has resulted from the previous five Talent Searches of the Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth, the article develops the rationale and success behind the talent-search concept as a useful strategy for identifying the intellectually gifted. (Author)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Conceptual Schemes, Costs, Evaluation Methods

Diamond, Karen E. – Journal of Educational Research, 1990
Findings from a 5-year follow-up study of 78 kindergartners suggest that while the Revised Denver Developmental Screening Test (RDDST) accurately predicts academic achievement and standardized test performance, it consistently misclassifies as normal the performance of a significant number of children who require special help in their early…

Using a Surrogate Test of Math Skills to Predict Performance of Non-Traditional Accounting Students.

Schiff, Jonathan B. – Delta Pi Epsilon Journal, 1989
A study was designed to predict student performance in the introductory accounting course, specifically the performance of nontraditional students. A predictive instrument to measure mathematical abilities was employed; outcomes were compared to individuals' final course grade. Results indicate that a brief math skills test can predict performance…
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Accounting, Adult Education, Mathematics Skills

Mullen, Joann – Psychology in the Schools, 1989
Reviews research concerning relationship of nonverbal ability measures recommended for hearing impaired students and learning potential. Reviews both earlier studies indicating that nonverbal measures could be used to predict academic achievement and more recent studies urging caution or suggest questionable predictability when interpreting data.…
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Educational Diagnosis, Elementary Secondary Education, Hearing Impairments

Youngstrom, Eric A.; Kogos, Jennifer L.; Glutting, Joseph J. – School Psychology Quarterly, 1999
Examines the incremental validity of Differential Ability Scales (DAS) factor scores in predicting standardized achievement scores in Word Reading, Basic Number Skills, and Spelling by using a nationally representative sample stratified on gender, ethnicity, geographic region, parental education, and educational classification. Results show that…
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Adolescents, Children, Cognitive Tests

Leonard, David K.; Jiang, Jiming – Research in Higher Education, 1999
Reviews and extends the literature demonstrating that the various College Board examinations, especially the Scholastic Aptitude Test, underpredict women's college grades relative to those of men in all fields except engineering, even when corrected for discipline and sampling. This suggests women are underrepresented relative to merit in freshman…
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, College Entrance Examinations, Grades (Scholastic), Higher Education

Armstrong, William B. – Community College Journal of Research and Practice, 2000
Examines the predictive validity of placement test scores with course grade and retention in English and mathematics courses. Suggests that student dispositional characteristics explain the high proportion of variance in the dependent variables, and that instructor grading practices also make a significant contribution. Underscores the importance…
