Oftentimes, when people hear the term posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), they automatically associate this disorder with soldiers who are returning from combat. However, school psychologists and other mental health professionals know differently. PTSD is a disorder that is not just limited to those returning from war, but it is a disorder that can affect children and adolescents. As a school psychologist, the author can attest to the fact that many young children and adolescents are classified with PTSD. Furthermore, as a school psychologist working in an urban community, the author has seen how PTSD affects children as a result of the unfortunate situations that occur in their communities and within their own homes. The purpose of this article is to help school psychologists gain a better understanding of how community violence and PTSD affect youth from urban areas, some of the traumatic experiences that these individuals may experience, and how school psychologists can help them cope with their unfortunate experiences.
