Teachers' and School Leaders' Perceptions of a Community School Model's Impact on Student Achievement

Community schools are a national initiative gaining traction due to the recent identification of the community school model as an evidence-based approach to education that satisfies requirements set forth by the Every Student Succeeds Act. The community school model centers around four pillars: integrated student support, extended and enriched learning opportunities, active family and community engagement, and shared leadership. With rapidly rising poverty rates and the expansion of community schools across the country, there is a need to ensure the efficiency and effective implementation of the community school model. The problem addressed in this qualitative case study is that the community school model is complex due to the individuality of each school's model, which leads to ambiguity during the implementation of community schools. This study aimed to explore the perceptions of community school teachers and school leaders and conduct a document analysis regarding what was believed to be the most impactful components of the community school model. Fourteen participants completed a semi-structured interview through this case study, and nine documents were reviewed from higher-performing community schools. Participants and documents identified external supports believed to have the most significant impact on student achievement. Upon completion of the data analysis, three themes and three sub-themes were revealed. The themes and sub-themes included the importance of active family and community engagement, how extended and enriched learning time and opportunities support student achievement, the need to address out-of-school learning barriers, and the potential of shared leadership. Recommendations include practices to promote high-quality implementation of the community school model and recommendations to expand upon this research topic.
