A Case Study of Black Male Teachers in the Academic Advancement of Black Students in a Low Socioeconomic School
Patrice A. Garmon
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Texas
The United States public school system continues to be more diverse year after year. Even though the Black student population has increased significantly, the number of Black teachers has not. Although the achievement gap between Black students and non-Black students has decreased, there is still a concern about the educational outcomes of Black students. This study examined the importance of Black male educators in the academic advancement of Black students. Five Black male teachers were interviewed for this study. Each participant spoke about their experiences as Black male teachers in a low socioeconomic elementary school. They discussed why they became educators, cultural pedagogy, and how to recruit and retain Black male teachers.
