Holding the Despair of Medical Trauma: The Power of Dyadic Regulation
Lakatos, Patricia P.
Zero to Three (J), v32 n6 p9-13 Jul 2012
When parents make an unintentional mistake that harms their child, the associated guilt and grief can be overwhelming and difficult to treat. The parents described in this article unknowingly created a medical emergency when they added water to their child's formula, thinking it would help her constipation. The baby survived the trauma--but with potentially lifelong disabilities. The author describes how these parents struggled with shame, despair, grief, and frequent traumatic reminders as they began to participate in court-mandated psychotherapy. Ultimately, the parents began to find their voices, grieve, and rediscover their place as loving parents while keeping their hope alive.
