Tools to Enhance Family Engagement in Early Intervention: A Roadmap to Acceptance
Van Nest, Sandra
ZERO TO THREE, v37 n6 p37-43 Jul 2017
Mental health therapists use strategies such as rupture and repair, unconditional positive regard, and managing countertransference to help their clients achieve therapeutic goals. These tools work across disciplines. Teaching parents to use therapeutic techniques increases opportunities to enhance their child's development and builds compliance with therapeutic strategies across the children's natural environment. This article demonstrates the treatment of an 18-month-old non-communicative boy with global delays, sensory processing difficulties, and behavioral outbursts. As the child's family grew in acceptance of their child, and his strengths and challenges, the child progressed in all areas of development.
