Cooperative learning (CL) structures allow students to excel academically and succeed in interpersonal skills. However, during parent-teacher conferences, several parents express doubt about the effectiveness of cooperative learning techniques with children who have been identified as gifted learners (based on teachers' recommendations, followed by IQ testing). In this article, the author explains the benefits of using cooperative learning as part of an integrated approach to teaching and learning and describes a strategy that challenges the preconceived notions of parents who are skeptical about the benefits of cooperative learning. The author also describes the potential of engaging families in dialogue and its impact in classrooms. The author suggests that teachers who want to engage parents in dialogue and in understanding the benefits of cooperative learning must use thoughtful planning, expert advice, and sincerity. Tips for responding to families' concerns about teaching strategies are presented.
