In Kathleen Loomis's preschool classroom at the Bennington College Early Childhood Center, the goal for children is not to produce beautiful and expressive artworks or to learn specific methods of working with art media--although those things do happen. Here, the curriculum is built around the philosophy that learning to think and create with art materials and forms (like painting, drawing, sculpture, or dance) carries over to all subjects. Art is a discipline that is accessible to all ages and abilities. Kathleen, the teacher, places art at the center of the curriculum. In her classroom, art is not primarily about creating a product, nor is it about craft or technique. It is about thinking and sharing thoughts in a calm, respectful, and productive environment. It is not enough for the children to create art; it is also important that their art be shared in a meaningful way.
