"Yeah, I Like It!" Assessing What Children Think of Child Care
Godfrey, Michael; Cemore, Joanna
Young Children, v60 n4 p86-93 Jul 2005
Children behave differently when they spend the day in child care and knowing their ideas about care is vital to understanding their happiness, continued development and learning. In this article, the authors share their methods and acquired wisdom about surveying young children, as well as the results of their study--what children think about coming to care, their teachers, their settings, and how such assessments benefit teachers. They offer a list of questions to ask children and presented seven important guidelines to help overcome the problems in assessing young children. The authors conclude that there are high-quality settings in all forms of child care. Finding, or making, a place that fits individual children will add an additional dimension to quality child care and help children achieve their potential. To find out what children like is as simple as asking them with a comfortable, fun, systematic assessment.
