Six Stones for a Mosaic: Louise and Teaching from Her Son's Perspective
Ratner, Jonathan
Voices from the Middle, v12 n3 p6-8 Mar 2005
Louise Rosenblatt, the author's mother, is invited to say a few words to the attendees of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Annual Convention at an afternoon session. As the appointed hour nears, he helps her navigate her way to the hall entrance. Staggered, he feels his heart almost stop. Louise keeps walking--and a few minutes later, calmly delivers her remarks. Later, he is told that a member of the audience, a teacher who was not familiar with Louise's work, asked the session organizer, "She seems to be a big deal as a theorist, but what does she say when she's at home about teachers like me?" This mosaic--six stones uneven in form and size--is his answer to this penetrating question: (1) A paradox: Although her professional life was dedicated to teaching, classroom teaching was not her first choice; (2) Louise is just a teacher like you; (3) Louise's interest in teachers was genuine and personal; (4) The mandarins of literary criticism inhabited--and defined--liberal arts departments of English; (5) Louise took teachers seriously; and (6) Tributes to Louise are heartwarming to her family and friends. So her memory is best served not simply by praising her, but by grappling with her ideas. (Contains 1 footnote.)
