Part-Time Students and Part-Time Study in Higher Education in the UK: Strand 1--A Quantitative Data Analysis of 2003/04 HESA Data
Ramsden, Brian
Universities UK
This is a report of the Strand 1 element of the Universities UK project to examine part-time students and part-time study within the United Kingdom. The aim of Strand 1 of this project is to set out, as far as possible, factual information about students studying part-time and following programmes of study leading to higher education qualifications, drawing on the statistical information published by, or otherwise available through, HESA and other sources. It is intended that the Strand 1 report will provide information which has value in itself, and will also inform the second and third strands of this project. The main body of this report is concerned with students studying within higher education institutions (HEIs). However, Appendix 1 provides some comparable data about part-time students studying for higher education qualifications in further education colleges. The report provides information about the most up-to-date known situation--for most of the data this is 2003/04, but with destinations data relating to those gaining qualifications in 2002/03 in respect of part-time students. Having studied the data carefully, the authors have concluded that it would be highly misleading to provide any time series comparisons. The reasons for this are to do with changes in the coverage of HESA data over time as well as other definitional changes in certain fields, and also changes in institutional practice in the return of data: a detailed explanation of the issues is given in Appendix 2. Appended are: (1) Part-time HE students in further education colleges; and (2) Definitions and technical notes. (Contains 68 figures and 18 footnotes.)
