According to Jacoby (1996), service-learning, officially defined in 1967, is "a form of experiential education in which students engage in activities that address human and community needs together with structured opportunities intentionally designed to promote student learning and development." Service-learning combines academic study, service to the community, and hands-on experience. The University of Louisiana Lafayette implements the practice in a variety of academic programs that encourage students to venture outside the classroom and immerse themselves in projects and problems of the community that surrounds their campus. In this article, the authors describe a service-learning activity that benefited the construction technology students and helped members of the local community recover from hurricane-caused damages.
