The "Highly Satisfied" Teaching Artist in Dance: A Case Study
Risner, Doug; Anderson, Mary Elizabeth
Teaching Artist Journal, v10 n2 p94-101 2012
This case study is drawn from the authors' ongoing international study of teaching artists in dance and theatre. The study takes an in-depth look at teaching artists' artistic and academic preparation in dance and theatre, entry into the teaching artist field, rewards, challenges, and assessment of their work, and their professional development, as well as the level of satisfaction they report in their work. Jayme, whose words opened this essay, typifies a minority of dance teaching artists in the authors' study's findings--that is, she's highly satisfied with her teaching artist work. Only one third of dance participants said they were highly satisfied. The authors present excerpts from her case study in order to illuminate possibilities for teaching artist satisfaction, where it's found and how it might be cultivated and sustained. Throughout this essay, the authors share additional findings from the authors' larger study to contextualize Jayme's experience, while giving readers a snapshot of the larger population of teaching artists in dance today. In closing, they briefly discuss four additional characteristics of this case study that may contribute to increased satisfaction and enhanced meaning in teaching artists' work.
