In a random national sample of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons), religious commitment had the strongest direct effect on religious behavior, while belief (orthodoxy), personal community relationships, and religious socialization produced indirect effects. Concludes that Harry Marx's (1964) inference of a general opiate quality in black religion is incomplete and misleading. Examines data concerning religion and civil rights militancy.
