Teaching for Civic Participation with Negotiation Role Plays
Smith, Stacie Nicole
Social Education, v68 n3 p194 Apr 2004
This activity is designed to help teachers engage students in a critical examination of the challenges embedded in balancing economic, environmental, and immigration policy. Students take on the roles of environmental and elderly advocacy groups, both for and against increased immigration. By taking on the personalities and interests of these groups, students gain first-hand experience in negotiation, learn about complex issues and the various perspectives that come into play, and ultimately find out that these perspectives may not be mutually exclusive. Once the latter is understood, it may lead to resolutions acceptable to all parties. (Contains 3 notes.)
