Teaching Students to Think Critically about Technology and Society: "Approaches and Strategies"
Aaron Cavazos; Jacob Pleasants
Social Education, v88 n2 p 86-91 2024
According to the authors, we live in a society that is deeply influenced by technology, and social studies classrooms are ideal places for students to conduct inquiries into timely and relevant technological issues. In this article, the authors describe an approach that can be used across many situations to teach students to think critically about technology and society. When teachers address technology with students, their goal is to help students conduct deep, critical inquiries that explore societally relevant issues. Technoskepticism is not about adopting or rejecting specific technologies but rather thinking carefully about the relationships that people have - and want to have - with technology. The approach and practical strategies that the authors present are based on their experiences working with students in sixth through eighth grades. The authors work with students during an after-school program where teachers guide them through student-driven inquiries into issues related to technologies students find meaningful to their lives. They authors have found their approach useful for helping students address progressively deeper and more technoskeptical questions about current issues and events related to technology.
