Anti-Social Media: Teaching Slow Responses to Fast Media

Part of media education is showing students other ways of being, knowing, and making change away from social media. Such experiences can allow youth to reflect not only on the benefits and drawbacks of social media, but how they change the flow of our lives. They are then better positioned to choose when to use, or not use social media. Educators can accomplish this goal by providing students experiences in "anti-social media environments." One way to create such an anti-environment is to bring the biases of social media to consciousness by comparing it to offline alternatives. For students who regularly use social media, this can help them see, for example, how social media conveys simplistic views of others and feeds content that confirms biases. Such activities need not be anti-social media per se, but they should help students step back and consider the range of possible options for communication and civic change, including what social media can do and undo in our lives.
