No Place to Escape: Explaining the Cultural Revolution to American Students
Jiang, Ji-li
Social Education, v76 n3 p132-134 May-Jun 2012
In this article the author reflects on her visits to American schools to talk about the experiences she describes in "Red Scarf Girl." In her book, she explains picture by picture, story after story how she and her family lived in darkness, how they were brainwashed, and about the concentration of power in China. She stresses that American kids also have their own set of difficulties and challenges. That's why she keeps telling her stories. She hopes children will be able to find their courage instead of yielding to pressure; that they will be able to use their minds and follow their hearts. When the time comes, they will stand up for themselves and make the right decisions.
