In this article, the authors share a project developed and implemented in an eighth-grade science classroom in which students apply what they have learned about biomes to create sustainable cities. This project promotes environmental literacy through helping students understand the interrelated elements of sustainable environmental systems and how the community, economy, and the environment are connected and mutually dependent. Additionally, through such projects, students can better understand their own attitudes, values, and behaviors toward the environment and explore the attitudes, values, and behaviors in other cultures and places, as well. This activity addresses several of the National Science Education Standards (NRC 1996), including those under life sciences, science and technology, and science in personal and social perspectives.
