The concept of flight for human beings has always been closely tied to imagination. To fly like a bird requires a mind that also soars. Therefore, good teachers who want to teach the scientific principles of flight recognize that it is helpful to share stories of their search for the keys to flight. The authors share some of these with the reader, using technology. The account of the work of the Wright brothers is one such a story. The idea of flight drew the brothers to the scientific articles in the Dayton (Ohio) Public Library in 1895 where Wilbur, age 28, and Orville, age 24, found their inspiration. Their reading led them to the work of a German inventor, Otto Lilienthal, who had conducted extensive glider experiments that reminded them of creations they had made from bamboo, cork, and rubber bands as teenagers. This article offers resources in which students can learn about flight.
