David, Edward E., Jr. – Science, 1979
This article calls for a more intimate relation between industry and academia. It discusses the essential features of the U.S. research and development system, looking at characteristics of industrial research and of academic research as they might affect a partnership. (author/BB)
Descriptors: Industry, Research, Research Needs, Scientific Research

Mack, Arien; And Others – Science, 1979
It has recently been shown that perceived motion, in the absence of any appropriate retinal motion, is a sufficient stimulus to generate smooth pursuit eye motions. However, three experiments show that perceived motion is not necessary for pursuit, but that retinal motion always governs pursuit. (BB)

Gross, Karen; And Others – Science, 1979
This letter is polemic. It has been proposed that developmental dyslexia is associated with bilateral hemispheric representation of spatial function that interferes with specialized left hemispheric processing of linguistic information. The data presented, however, may not warrant this conclusion. (BB)

Descriptors: Drug Education, Health Education, Narcotics, Research

Metz, William D. – Science, 1973
X-ray emitting bodies orbiting stars have been located. Research on black holes has brought out many characteristics of these X-ray emitting bodies. (PS)
Descriptors: Astronomy, Physical Sciences, Research, Research Methodology

Hammond, Allen L. – Science, 1973
Article provides an account of alternatives for solving energy shortage problems in future years. A national policy is needed. More concerted effort should be made to develop technologies for conversion of energy from conventional and non-conventional resources so that energy is cheaper, available for use and without environmental hazards. (PS)

Descriptors: Editorials, Federal Aid, Financial Support, Research

Walsh, John – Science, 1979
The demographics of academic science are changing with the increase in the number of doctoral level researchers who are excluded from the traditional faculty tenure track, but hold research posts on open-ended terms. (Author/BB)
Descriptors: College Faculty, Research, Science Education, Scientific Personnel

Brenner, D.; And Others – Science, 1978
Reports the detection of magnetic fields associated with the flow of electric current in the human brain in response to electrical stimulation of the fingers. (SL)
Descriptors: Anatomy, Biological Sciences, Human Body, Neurology

Marx, Jean L. – Science, 1973
Discusses current research relating to the use of pheromones as a means of controlling insect pests. These chemicals, which are secreted by insects to affect the behavior of other individuals of the same species, may be used to eliminate pests without destroying their predators and other beneficial insects. (JR)
Descriptors: Biology, Entomology, Environmental Education, Insecticides

Lewin, Roger – Science, 1980
Summarizes events of a conference on evolutionary biology in Chicago entitled: "Macroevolution." Reviews the theory of modern synthesis, a term used to explain Darwinism in terms of population biology and genetics. Issues presented at the conference are discussed in detail. (CS)
Descriptors: Biology, Conferences, Evolution, Genetics

Cruickshank, Alexander M. – Science, 1977
The Gordon Research Conferences were established to stimulate research in universities, research foundations, and industrial laboratories. The topics for the conferences are listed as well as the locations and scheduled presentations at each conference. (CS)
Descriptors: Biology, Chemistry, Conferences, Nutrition

Maugh, Thomas H., II – Science, 1974
Reports the outcome of a meeting in which 21 of the world's more prominent scientists and philosophers of science attempted to analyze the creative process in science and medicine and explore ways in which scientific creativity might be taught. (JR)
Descriptors: Creative Development, Creative Thinking, Creativity, Instruction

Gevins, A. S.; And Others – Science, 1979
Electroencephalograms were analyzed during performance of verbal and spatial tasks. Complex scalp distributions of theta-, beta-, and, to a lesser extent, alpha-band spectral intensities discriminated between the two members of a pair of tasks, such as writing sentences and Koh's block design. (Author/BB)
Descriptors: Electroencephalography, Neurology, Physiology, Research

Science, 1977
Surveys 5,000 years of artworks, encompassing 1,180 scorable instances of unimanual tool or weapon usage. No systematic trends in hand usage were revealed. Right hand use averaged 93 percent of all cases regardless of which historical era or geographic region was assessed. (SL)
