McFee, Evan E. – School Science and Mathematics, 1970
Descriptors: Biology, College Science, Course Descriptions, Methods Courses

Welch, Wayne W. – School Science and Mathematics, 1980
This paper hypothesized an explanation for declining achievement scores in science, centering a reduction in time and emphasis devoted to cognitive activities. Analysis of data did not produce definitive results, but indicated a need for further study. (MK)

Rowsey, Robert E. – School Science and Mathematics, 1997
Investigates the influences of teachers and schooling on 35 research scientists. Results indicate that 63% of the subjects had identified a genuine interest in science by ninth grade. Only 9% of them attributed this to elementary or junior high teachers while 43% of the scientists were influenced by one or more high school teachers. (Author/JRH)
Descriptors: Career Choice, Elementary Secondary Education, Higher Education, Influences

Sumrall, William J. – School Science and Mathematics, 1995
Students (n=358) in grades one through seven were asked to draw and describe a scientist. Subjects' reasons for drawing a scientist of a particular race and gender fell into 12 categories, including self-image, media influence, known role model, stereotyping, and need for more diversity. (14 references) (Author/MKR)
Descriptors: Beliefs, Elementary Education, Elementary School Students, Grade 7

Mensch, David L.; Rubba, Peter A. – School Science and Mathematics, 1991
The effectiveness of using a set of models in two protein synthesis laboratory exercises accompanied by a series of two lectures on the topic was assessed. The purpose, procedure, example test items, the findings, and a discussion are included. (KR)
