Investigates the influences of teachers and schooling on 35 research scientists. Results indicate that 63% of the subjects had identified a genuine interest in science by ninth grade. Only 9% of them attributed this to elementary or junior high teachers while 43% of the scientists were influenced by one or more high school teachers. (Author/JRH)

Subjects' reasons for drawing a scientist of a particular race and gender fell into 12 categories, including self-image, media influence, known role model, stereotyping, and need for more diversity.
