Newport, John F. – School Science and Mathematics, 1979
An adjustment period in the transition from group instruction to individualized approaches is suggested as partly contributing to the decline in achievement scores in mathematics. (MP)
Descriptors: Achievement, Basic Skills, Elementary Secondary Education, Individual Instruction

Engelhardt, Jon M. – School Science and Mathematics, 1976
Games and laboratory experiences which can be used to help build basic skills are described. (SD)
Descriptors: Basic Skills, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics, Games

Hagan, Ronald D. – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
The arithmetic portion of the Tennessee Eighth Grade Basic Skills Test is examined. A stratified sample of elementary teachers in Tennessee was used in the investigation. Data available suggest that unsatisfactory scores obtained by some students on the test do not come from teachers' failures to teach the subject. (MP)
Descriptors: Basic Skills, Educational Research, Elementary Secondary Education, Evaluation

Morgenstern, Frances B.; Pincus, Morris – School Science and Mathematics, 1975
A method of teaching computation of fractions with visual aids is described. (SD)
Descriptors: Basic Skills, Diagrams, Division, Elementary Education

Uprichard, A. Edward; Collura, Carolyn – School Science and Mathematics, 1977
The goal was to help 7- and 8-year olds develop computational skills in addition and subtraction. Experimental groups received instruction emphasizing mathematical structure while control groups worked on drill activities. Results showed that emphasizing structure facilitated the development of number concepts, place value, and computational…
Descriptors: Addition, Basic Skills, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics

Dodd, Carol A.; And Others – School Science and Mathematics, 1975
This study compares the effectiveness of two methods of training preservice elementary teachers to diagnose and treat students' arithmetical errors. (SD)
Descriptors: Basic Skills, Diagnostic Teaching, Educational Diagnosis, Elementary Education

Hovey, Larry; Hovey, Kathi – School Science and Mathematics, 1983
Sections look at: (1) Historical Perspective; (2) Naming the New System; (3) The Metric Units; (4) Measuring Larger and Smaller Amounts; (5) Advantage of Using the Metric System; (6) Metric Symbols; (7) Conversion from Metric to Customary System; (8) General Hints for Helping Children Understand; and (9) Current Status of Metric Conversion. (MP)
Descriptors: Basic Skills, Instruction, Mathematical Applications, Mathematics Education

Mitchell, Charles E. – School Science and Mathematics, 1983
It is noted that defining subtraction independently of addition through use of physical objects can help one to illustrate the non-commutativity of this operation. Lack of awareness of the importance of the order of the digits may be a primary cause of errors in compound subtraction. (MP)
Descriptors: Basic Skills, Computation, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics

Smart, James R. – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
The focus is on suggestions, with examples, for teaching estimation skills. Estimating can be a very enjoyable as well as a very useful part of mathematics, helping to improve attitudes of pupils toward the subject by providing success. Estimation is shown not to be synonymous with mental arithmetic. (MP)
Descriptors: Basic Skills, Elementary Secondary Education, Estimation (Mathematics), Instruction

Austin, Joe Dan – School Science and Mathematics, 1982
An overview is provided of the current literature on mathematical learning of children with a learning disability. Mathematics for the population viewed is seen to mean mainly arithmetic. It is felt more research is clearly needed on teaching arithmetic to children with a learning disability. (MP)
Descriptors: Arithmetic, Basic Skills, Computation, Educational Research

Beeson, B. F.; Walsh, Eulalie – School Science and Mathematics, 1976
A pilot project conducted in a fifth-grade class was designed to allow students to work on basic skill development at their own levels of competence. The grouping and regrouping of students after periodic diagnosis was a major feature of the project. (SD)
Descriptors: Basic Skills, Educational Diagnosis, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics
