Schools and Safety: Waiting for When
Ruder, Robert
School Business Affairs, v78 n6 p24-25 Jun 2012
In response to violence against students and school personnel in the past decade, school districts have implemented an array of security measures designed to keep all the occupants of a school free from harm. Despite these safeguards, personnel continue to operate under the assumption that it's not a question of "if," it's a question of "when." Evaluating two elements of an overarching school district safety program may offer insight into what improvements or modifications can be made to an already-comprehensive security program. Although both elements are in place in most schools, revisiting them may serve as a reminder of their value. The first element, basic school safety, speaks to school security and the role every student and staff member has in ensuring the safety of one another in the school setting. The second and more challenging element addresses the strategies districts can use to provide assistance and intervention to students and staff members in need.
