School leaders are reporting an uptick in anger in their communities these days--often diffuse, unfocused anger--among staff members, parents and neighbors. In the face of threat, the first impulse of education leaders is to toughen up, tighten down and begin broadcasting their messages. Since anxiety and rage come with uncertain times, the authors suggest three additional models of leadership and communication to bring one's community through the tough times. These are: (1) the leader as listener; (2) the leader as stabilizer; and (3) the leader as change agent. The author stresses that guiding one's community through these days will take careful listening, clear and focused messages that address the questions and fears of stakeholders, and careful attention to all the relationships between the school division and the community.
