The selection of appropriately simple and authentic reading materials for high school Russian classes is discussed in light of the temporal and lexical constraints of that instructional level. A collection of 4-5,000 color slides is the basis for the course, with lectures focussed on literature, philosophy, religion, politics, art and crafts. Supplementary, non-textbook materials used in Russian civilization classes include "Paintings from the Russian Museum Collection," with text in Russian and English; a Russian desk calendar; "In the Russian Style," with costume photographs and poetry excerpts, and a Russian primary school book. The use of three new handbooks to study Russian classics in advanced college Russian classes is described. The handbooks are an effort to help students with vocabulary, cultural information, and idioms found in the original texts. (MSE)
