Russian Education and Society, v48 n12 p13-27 Dec 2006
One of the most important technical institutions of higher learning in Russia is the Urals State Technical University (USTU). In the years that it has been in operation, Urals State Technical University-Urals Polytechnical Institute (USTU-UPI) has trained more than 185,000 specialists of high qualifications, people who have gone on to work in industrial enterprises, academic science institutes, and higher educational institutions in Russia. The history of the university is the life story and scientific creativity of talented and dedicated people. Today, USTU-UPI is a dynamically developing scientific academic complex. The excellent level of training of students at the university is attested by the fact that every year, more than 200 people are awarded fellowships in the names of the president of the Russian Federation, the government of the Russian Federation, the governor of Sverdlovsk Oblast, and the V. Potanin Charitable Foundation. In this article, the authors describe how USTU-UPI maintains its educational quality and how it continues to find jobs for its graduates. The authors also present how the continuous education in the university is built according to the following patterns: (1) the "technicum to higher educational institution" system; and (2) the acquisition of a second specialty for students at the university who are enrolled in the upper-division courses.
