At Home with the Johars: Another Look at Family Literacy
Mui, Selina; Anderson, Jim
Reading Teacher, v62 n3 p234-243 Nov 2008
In this article, we document the literacy practices of Genna Johar and her extended family. Genna, a grade 1 student, is a member of a Indo-Canadian joint family in which her parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, share a household. Family members including siblings and cousins play important roles in supporting Genna's literacy development; hybridized forms of literacy are enacted as school literacy practices are brought home; storybook reading is absent but an array of multimodal literacy practices are present daily; play is an important medium for language and literacy learning but the play and the literacy practices are highly structured; and popular culture is important in literacy and language learning at home. The study challenges prevailing conceptions of family literacy as parents reading books to children and documents the myriad ways that this family supports literacy; it also challenges educators to consider the meanings of "family" in our discourse.
