ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Arizona State University
Students' learning experience mainly depends on the knowledge and skills they learned in class. The objective of an interior design program is to teach students innovative design thinking and how to express their creative ideas. Students do individual and team assignments to learn relevant design cases and methods. The main teaching focus of interior design consists of design theory and design practice. Design theory courses include art history, history of design, in addition to some core principles of interior design. Design practice is taught mainly through studio courses in residential and commercial interior design. Interior design is relevant to architecture and construction. As architecture is a licensed profession in China, the enhancement of interior design education and practice occurs in many universities and colleges (Zhang, 2022). The design codes and construction methods of interior design in the United States (U.S.) and China are different. This research examines students' learning experiences in interior design programs at two specific universities: Xi'an Polytechnic University in China and Arizona State University in America. A comparative study was conducted to examine the program curriculum and the students' learning experiences. The research involved examining the curriculum and assessing student perceptions in these bachelor degree programs at the two universities. The research consisted of a literature review, an online survey, and non-participant observation. The research investigated both advantages and disadvantages of the interior design programs in Xi'an Polytechnic University and Arizona State University, to discover specific and relevant findings for improving student experiences in interior design higher education. The importance of this research is the results and findings of several years of research and study in interior design, to enhance interior design education, which provide students with better learning experience. The methodology used in this research is online survey. Participants are undergraduate students who study interior design program at Arizona State University in the United States and Xi'an Polytechnic University in China.
