Exploring the Factors That Influence College Students' Participation in Group Fitness within Campus Recreation
Alina Cioletti
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, The Ohio State University
Since the unforeseen onset of COVID-19, college students have encountered many different issues and challenges including housing insecurity, food insecurity, financial struggles, mental health challenges, and family obligations (Lederer et al., 2021). However, these struggles have had a disproportionate impact on nontraditional students compared to traditional students (Tai et al., 2021). Campus recreation, specifically group fitness, positively influences multiple areas of wellbeing for students and can help support some of their basic needs that students require. Although group fitness provides numerous benefits for students, participation in this program area has decreased for many institutions across the United States since the beginning of COVID-19. Using the Facilitators to Leisure model, this study aimed to understand if there was a difference in facilitators and barriers in group fitness between traditional and nontraditional students. Furthermore, another objective of this study was to understand if students who attended counseling in the last 12 months identify different facilitators or barriers to participation in group fitness compared to those who did not attend counseling. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was conducted and found significant differences in facilitators and barriers between these two groups. Disparities were found within two facilitator subscales, including Interpersonal and Structural, while differences were found in three leisure constraint subscales, including Individual/Psychological, Lack of Partners, and Time. There were no differences found in facilitators or barriers between students who attended counseling in the last 12 months and those who have not. This information provides insight to campus recreation practitioners on what facilitates participation in traditional and nontraditional students and what barriers prevent or limit participation in group fitness classes.
