Psychometric Properties of an Arabic Translated Version of the Adult Inventory of Procrastination Scale
Sara Mashat
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Wayne State University
Ferrari (2010) stated 20-25% of people self-identified as chronic procrastinators, which is a common self-regulatory failure involving stalling the initiation or completion of important duties or responsibilities until the last minute, after a predetermined deadline, or indefinitely (Dryden, 2000). This study is the first attempt to translate and analyze the psychometric properties of the AIP scale with an Arabic speaking sample. It is important to assess procrastination rate among Arabic speaking sample, and to compare it with international procrastination rates for cross-cultural comparison. The purpose of this study was to translate and then test the reliability and validity of an Arabic version of the AIP. The total sample included 601 students of which 280 identified as men (46.6%) and 313 as women (52.1%). An Arabic version was translated by the researcher and then back translated by a panel of experts. The AIP had high level of internal consistency reliability, Cronbach's alpha was 0.85. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) two factor loading explaining 62% of the total variance. These finding suggest that AIP is a valid measure for determining the degree of procrastination tendency for the Arabic speaking students.
