Exploring Caregiver Experiences That Build Trust: A Single Site Case Study in a Suburban Elementary Community School

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore caregiver experiences at a community elementary school in suburban Wisconsin. The community school strategy aims to ensure all students flourish in thriving school communities, establishing partnerships among school staff, caregivers, and the community (Community Schools Forward, 2023). Given the disparities in student achievement in public education, the community school strategy has the potential to transform and support education reform practices through a comprehensive relationship centered approach (Oakes & Maier, 2023). The primary research question that guided this phenomenological single site case study was: What are the experiences of relational trust among caregivers as they engage in parental involvement events at a suburban, Midwestern elementary community school? The researcher conducted nine interviews, a confirmatory focus group of four participants, and document analysis. Based on the results of this study, the researcher recommended that for trusting relationships to develop community schools strive to create consistent, open, reliable, and competent communication for caregivers; multiple means for caregivers to connect with staff; and create meaningful partnerships. Given the positive outcomes of parental involvement, the lack of high confidence parental involvement strategies, the power of trust among school staff and parents, and the effect inviting families to be present can have, the community schools' strategy offers a viable solution for communities and school districts (Anderson & Minke, 2007; Bryk & Schneider, 2003; Epstein, 2010; Tschannen-Moran, 2014).
