"Weathering the Storm": An Emotion Regulation Skills Based Program for South Asian Americans with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Although ADHD has been extensively researched as a complex neurodevelopmental disorder across the decades, the phenomenon of emotion dysregulation (ED) requires further exploration, as it may be an overlooked area of impairment that contributes to worse health and quality of life outcomes for individuals with ADHD. Research on the prevalence of ADHD in the United States among different racial and ethnic groups found that South Asian Americans (SAAs), have significantly lower rates of ADHD diagnoses and treatment compared to other racial and ethnic groups across the lifespan, and are less likely than other racial/ethnic groups to seek and engage with mental health services. Low rates of ADHD diagnoses and treatment among SAAs may be due to cultural barriers that affect help-seeking behaviors, potentially leading to worse experiences of ED and poor life outcomes. The following dissertation seeks to create an emotion regulation skills-based program for South Asian American college students, who struggle with ADHD and emotion dysregulation. A review of the literature on the needs of this population, as well as current treatment interventions and treatment gaps for ADHD, emotion dysregulation, and SAAs, have been presented. Additionally, the results of interviews with key informants will also be presented to further establish a need for this program. Finally, the author will present the program components, the program goals and objectives, an analysis of the estimated costs needed to run this program, and a plan for program evaluation.
